First You’re Born, is about six social misfits whose lives change unexpectedly as they stumble out of their apartments… and into each other: Axel and Bimsy love each other but split up on a whim; Viktor is one big headache; agoraphobic sisters Tis and Lis consider a trip to the post-box a major expedition and Tudeberg’s main asset is his ability to clean.
The Stage Theatre Review First You’re Born by John di Folco “First, some advice - fasten your seatbelts and adjust your emotional receptors for a white-knuckle roller coaster ride into the surreal, absurdist world of Danish playwright Line Knutzon whose take on human relationships - mostly love, neuroses, pain, anguish and fears - are all acted out in a single block of flats symbolically skeletal, a mini world that’s devastatingly transparent. No, First You’re Born, getting its UK premiere at The Byre Theatre, St Andrews prior to touring, is not hefty dollops of Nordic angst, but a superbly structured and sensitive piece of theatre shot through with flashes of hilariously zany humour. The rapid-fire dialogues are delivered brilliantly by a great cast as the odd-ball neighbours, each performance a polished gem in a beautifully crafted production by Tim Licita. Knutzon’s script, translated with a fine feel for idiom by Charlotte Barslund and Kim Damback, is utterly mesmerising. Exploratory and hugely imaginative in its reach, it whizzes and crackles with an innovative verbal energy as were are introduced to the six characters whose lives and loves collide. They are an eccentric bunch, but thoroughly engaging. Richard Conlon’s Axel and Natalie Bennett as his aptly named Bimsy make a skittish couple and breaking up are a delicious mix of petulance, whimsy and nutty revenge. Ian Cameron’s Victor, the man with the migraine and a passing goods train roaring through his head, is magnificent, shifting from torment to philosophic observations to find true love, as is Sean Hay’s compelling portrayal of Tudeberg, the lonely, amiable compulsive obsessive with a chair fixation. Anita Vettesse and Mary Gapinski movingly catch the journey of agoraphobic sisters from timidity to self-confidence and romance.”
